S,there is a way to fix this problem, I owned a refinishing shop 4 _30 years and would not recomened that you try to repair it yourself.. you can cause more damage then good doing this without any real experience ....if you value this piece again I say take it to a refinish shop

The thing is i'm on a pretty tight budget. I do have some experience refinishing but nothing I cared about as much as this item. My husband is a carpenter, but the same thing goes for him with antique experience. If it was just the top it would be easy, but if I do the top i'd have to do the WHOLE dresser. Do you have any guesstimate as to how much it would cost? Its about 5' tall 2' wide 4 drawers, with two small ones with brass keyholes on top and a swivel mirror on top. legs with the brass wheels on it too. Thanks for your help!

suze, if it is carved in the top then a repair shop would only need to refinish the top, If they say different then they do not know what they are doing....AGAIN you should not attempt this yourself, If it has value!!! I would try to tell you how to fix it but would need to type a book to do this....sorry
