Anytime a surgeon places a laproscopic inside a patient, there can be damange to the intestine. This is recognized about 75% of the time and corrected. When this happens, there usually is no significant consequence. However, if the injury to the intestine is not immediately identified, the patient will become quite sick after surgery.
Now, that being said, when done properly, laparoscopic surgery is almost always better than "open" surgery in terms or patient recovery. The true incidence of bowel injury is not known, but is likely much less than 1% and probably less than 0.1%.
There is also a similar risk of unintended bowel injury during open surgery.
I hope this answers your question.
