As long as they are secured properly shouldn't be a problem. That means in a proper gun cabinet, with a good lock and the key stored somewhere safe where the kids are not going to find it. Don't forget to store the ammunition in another cabinet that should also be locked.  Never store a loaded weapon anywhere near where children will have access.

If a gun would be necessary for protection, I would make sure that it was under lock and key and that my children didn't even know it existed. If there is no reason for a gun, it would be in my house at all.

Life is a one lap race. Make many pitstops.

Why on earth would you have a gun in your house for protection if you have it hidden, have a lock on the trigger, have the key to the lock in another location, do not have it loaded, keep the ammo in another locked location, keep the key to that location hidden, keep it a secret that a gun is in the house, etc. If and when you ever had the occasion to require the use of the gun for protection of yourself or your family, by the time you did all the things to obtain the gun, it would be too late to help. Forget the whole thing and just keep a few large rocks laying around the house.....and pray for someone else to help you.

I don't want guns around my house. When my kids were little, my husband had several old rifles that he inherited from his relatives. He kept them in a gun rack attached to the wall.

I allowed him to have the guns, but didn't allow him to have any bullets.

I don't think kids and guns mix, period. It only takes ONE TIME for your safety measures (gun lock, gun safe, locked box for ammunition, etcetera) to be missed and there's a potential tragedy in the making.

And it's not just little kids at risk. Teens are just as likely to get into your things - especially if no one's home and they think they can get away with it.

Got kids? Don't have guns.

Just put it in the place that the children will never see it.

There is a lot of paranoia today about guns and kids. Although I agree we need to be careful, the statement 'guns and kids don't mix' is just another example of how we have been swayed by the extremists.  You could just as easily and more accurately say knives and kids don't mix and we don't lock up our knives! Education and training are the key to safety.  When the kids are too young to educate and train in the proper use of firearms, then they are also too young (usually) to pick one up and load it, and definitely too young to get past any locks you may have on them.  You have to teach them safety as soon as they are old enough to understand what safety is. If you have a teenager who is going to 'play' with your guns when he/she thinks they can get away with it then chances are they will figure out a way around any security measures you have taken. Then you have a more serious problem and that is a teenager who does not respect you or your wishes or the law. Then it's time to decide which you feel is more dangerous to have around the house, a gun or a teenager who plays with guns.  Personally I think a teenager who plays with guns is far more dangerous than a gun.   Just my humble opinion.
