Surrender.  Surrender.  But don't give yourself away . . . .

Guilty carnivore

I am an animal lover, but also an avid meat eater.  How do you justify the eating of meat when you love animals, especially the way animals are treated before slaughtering.  I have tried forgoing meat ~ made it over 6 months ~ and felt tired, listless, cranky . . . . all the time.

What goes around comes around

You can take the circle of life approach. We eat animals as part of the food chain while they eat smaller animals and so on. After we die we fertilize the land which will bring forth food for other animals.

It is true that today there are alternatives that enable us not to eat animals but in the old days this wasn't an option since survival was the only objective.

You can find much respect towards animals in the Native Americans' culture. They would eat animals but still respected them a great deal. This shows us the loving animals and eating animals aren't necessarily values that contradict each other.

Thank you, Carlos.  I think it was easier to respect the animals we eat when we saw them roaming the land.  It is easy to forget that these were majestic animals when all we see is some flesh wrapped in plastic.  You are right though ~ it is the circle of life.  Every day I watch my girl cat kill mice, birds, red squirrels, and know this is the way it was intended to be.  I guess it is an inner struggle I will always have to face.

Hi Skitch, You don't have to justify your beliefs to anyone but yourself. If you have a personal issue with eating meat, well, then good luck to you. On the other hand, if you feel the need to justify that, because of other people views and opinions. Don't. If their your friends, they should support you either way. And if their not your friends, ah, I won't use those words here, but I think you know what I mean !!

Thank you, Spirit Dog.  This has nothing to do with other people's feelings.  I don't think anyone I know gives a rat's rump what I choose to eat and why I choose to eat it.  I live in an area where hunting is a huge part of their lives.  I understand the need for hunting on an intellectual level, but for the life of me I cannot understand the desire to do it.  I sit at my computer each morning and watch the deer nibble at my lawn and just cannot understand the desire to put a bullet through that beautiful hide.  So, periodically, usually during BBQ season, I get attacked by my own conscious.  Like I said, I tried to forgo animal flesh, but felt as if I was hurting myself by doing it.  So, there really isn't an answer to this dilemma.  I simply have to reconcile myself to who I am and what I need.

I ask myself this quite a few times, as I see videos of what are done to animals, I just recently saw one yesterday about pigs vs dogs, and that how pigs are JUST as smart as dogs and are just like them, ect..  I'm skinny enough and I'm not a BIG vegetable eater, so i have no idea how that would work.. it sucks.
