Guidance Counselors at School

Guidance counselors are supposed to help you decide what to do with your life. Aren't they only underpaid school staff themselves? Would they recommend their own job?

I wouldn't recommend answering Yedda questions... I do it anyway.

Guidance Counselors make more money then me...

So what you're saying is that there are things you do for fun and not for money. That's great (I also like to answer the Yedda questions when I have the answers).

But this is supposed to be career counseling, not about having fun...

and your point?  we do some things for fun and because we like to do them.

some people like to do career counseling.

 not me... but some.

obviously there are enough people who enjoy it that they are able to fill the supply of jobs.

High school counselors advise students regarding college majors, admission requirements, entrance exams, financial aid, trade or technical schools, and apprenticeship programs. They help students develop job search skills, such as resume writing and interviewing techniques. College career planning and placement counselors assist alumni or students with career development and job-hunting techniques.

School counselors at all levels help students to understand and deal with social, behavioral, and personal problems. These counselors emphasize preventive and developmental counseling to provide students with the life skills needed to deal with problems before they worsen and to enhance students? personal, social, and academic growth. Counselors provide special services, including alcohol and drug prevention programs and conflict resolution classes. They also try to identify cases of domestic abuse and other family problems that can affect a student?s development.

Counselors interact with students individually, in small groups, or as an entire class. They consult and collaborate with parents, teachers, school administrators, school psychologists, medical professionals, and social workers to develop and implement strategies to help students succeed.

While it may not be a glorious job many find it rewarding and fulfilling being able to help mold the future lives of young people.

Good luck and best wishes.

Guidance counselors are there to ask you questions and give you guidance, not tell you what to do with your life.  There are a LOT of people who really really enjoy helping others, and for them they're truly living their dream.  The ability to help a young person spread his/her wings and fly, who years later comes back to say "thank you" can be worth more than a million dollars in gold.  I'm not a guidance counselor myself, but I'm glad (most) every school has at least one!
