Green Tomatoes

Hi everyone, It was so cold over here in Washington and I still have tomato plants that have fruits on the vine. There are still the green tomatoes. I don't want to waste them. Do you have any ideas on how to cook them? I have heard about fried green tomatoes. Do you just put batter and fry them? Do you cut them in half to get the batter in?

Love is the battery of life....

Hi my dear friend,
You have another great option: Pickle them (almost the same way as you pickle cucumbers, a bit more spicy) it's great !..... and don't forget to send me a small jar.... (just kidding)....
Best personal regards,

Hi my friend OronD,

As I was driving to work, I was just thinking about pickling them.  Thank you.

I harvested about 35 lbs. of ripe and unripe tomatoes and still have a lot more to pick.  I brought a big bag of tomatoes to work, the rest of my co-workers have other produce and we kind of share our harvest.

I  have more picking to do tomorrow.  I fried the first batch without batter and it tasted like it was  pickled.  I already canned a lot of tomatoes and I will bring some to my friend.  She can use them in winter.  I have made tomato juice and they taste just like the canned tomato juice.  I wish you were close so I could share them with you.

Hi DB,

You can make salsa out of them.  Think of them as tomatillos in disguise.

  Yum!

Oh, for the fried green variety, slice them, dry them on paper towels, then dip in egg and then seasoned flour, crumbs, or cornmeal and fry.  Out standing a simple breast of chicken dish and white wine.

DB, I season them the same way I season eggplant before I fry that.  Salt, pepper, oregano and if you have it, fresh basil.  Mmmmm!!

Before a frost if you still have green tomatoes on the vines you can pull up the plant, shake-of the dirt, hang the plant upon a line, and the green tomatoes will slowly ripen-up and can be used also.
