You didn't indicate what age level you were looking for, but some back to school books that I use with early elementary students are

Chrysanthemum, Wemberly Worried, and Miss Bindergarten Gets Ready for Kindergarten.  The first two books are especially good because they deal with the fears of being different and not making friends that can cause a lot of anxiety in young students.

Thank you for the great ideas! You mentioned some truly wonderful books! I'm actually looking for resources that will target 4th - 5th graders. Any additional insight would be appreciated.

I had very good experience working with kids on fairy tales like stories, I think they appeal to any age, but in this age especially, trying to find your place in a very confusing world, there's a lot of comfort in an alternative world with a lot of structure.

How about Robin Hood or the tales of king Arthur?

If you are looking for something a little more modern, give a shot to Ursula LeGuin's "the earthsea cycle" it's a wonderful story of a boy wizard that can be a very good read after Harry Potter, the people in the story are complex and interesting and the story itself teach a lot about tolerance and responsibility.

Also in the same style but a little harder to read though very thought provoking and imaginative is Phillip Pullman "the golden compass".

I love The Important Book we also use it as a writing lesson to write The important Thing about Me.
