I had very good experience working with kids on fairy tales like stories, I think they appeal to any age, but in this age especially, trying to find your place in a very confusing world, there's a lot of comfort in an alternative world with a lot of structure.
How about Robin Hood or the tales of king Arthur?
If you are looking for something a little more modern, give a shot to Ursula LeGuin's "the earthsea cycle" it's a wonderful story of a boy wizard that can be a very good read after Harry Potter, the people in the story are complex and interesting and the story itself teach a lot about tolerance and responsibility.
Also in the same style but a little harder to read though very thought provoking and imaginative is Phillip Pullman "the golden compass".
