Grass torn out in clumps.

Some type of animal tore up our grass.  Anyone know what could have done this?  We have a fenced-in yard so not likely it was a deer or a dog.  The grass was torn out by big clumps.  Saw a couple grubs, but grass wasn't yellow or dieing.
