You might be a maverick who can really go on the fly. Obvioously most people aren't, although they're not all that rare. A solid background might help you get more focused.
Don't stress about it too much though. If worse comes to worst, you can always make up what you're missing as you go along. If the last thing on your mind right now is going back to school, studying right now will probably be less effective anyway.
The search for people who can answer your question continues for as long as needed - until you find the answer you were looking for.
