Graphic Design Studies

I'm considering Graphic Design studies. I am on the verge of completing my first degree, and I don't quite have the energy, nor the time to invest in another one...

Therefore, I'm wondering what would be the best way to go at it; would it be sufficiant to learn the SWs (photoshop, illustrator, InDesign, etc.), or should i invest in studying also the principles of design, history of art, etc.?

I would appreciate the opinion of you professionals out there, who have both the knowledge and experience.

You will be entering a highly competitive field so you should be sure you have the talent. A good psychometric or aptitude test is well worth the investment. If the results show without a doubt that you do have the talent and you enjoy designing and drawing you should go to a good professional school and not to one that teaches different SW packages. Check out the school's graduates and their successful positions in the design world. Visit design exhibitions to see what is current and speak to those in the field. There are many opportunities in many varied areas so if you are really good and get good professional training you should do well. Good Luck!!

You might be a maverick who can really go on the fly. Obvioously most people aren't, although they're not all that rare.  A solid background might help you get more focused.

Don't stress about it too much though. If worse comes to worst, you can always make up what you're missing as you go along. If the last thing on your mind right now is going back to school, studying right now will probably be less effective anyway.

I would recommend attending some design courses. I understand that you don't want to begin another degree. I've been in school for 7 years. I think its important to learn some design basics. These courses will help you build your portfolio which is key in getting you hired. Graphic design is much more than just learning the software. What is  your major now? A related field?

Authors@Google: Kenya Hara

Designer Kenya Hara visits Google's Mountain View, CA headquarters to discuss his book "Designing Design." This event took place on September 29, 2008, as part of the Authors@Google series. Representing a new generation of designers in Japan, Kenya Hara pays tribute to his mentors, using long overlooked Japanese icons and images in much of his work. In Designing Design, he impresses upon the reader the importance of "emptiness" in both the visual and philosophical traditions of Japan, and its application to design, made visible by means of numerous examples from his own work: Hara for instance designed the opening and closing ceremony programs for the Nagano Winter Olympic Games 1998. In 2001, he enrolled as a board member for the Japanese label MUJI and has considerably molded the identity of this successful corporation as communication and design advisor ever since. Kenya Hara, alongside Naoto Fukasawa one of the leading design personalities in Japan, has also called attention to himself with exhibitions such as "Re-Design: The Daily Products of the 21st Century" of 2000. Kenya Hara (born 1958) is a graphic designer, Professor at the Art University Musashino and communication advisor for MUJI.
