I am looking for data on the historical correlation between graduating from a top US universities and reaching top-level public positions in the US (presidents, senators, congressmen, etc)
It sounds like an interesting work and there is a chance you are the first to look for this correlation.
I guess that you can use Google scholar or any of the big sociology and education search engine. But if you want to get to the bottom of this issue you should go to the white house , congress and senate web site and start digging up statistics and biographies.
I have found a site that might help you start but my guess is that you will have to do some of the statistics by yourself.
