I am trying to reduce the murkiness of my tank by ...

I am trying to reduce the murkiness of my tank by adding charcoal, in addition to the packs in the filter. The store recommended activated carbon pellets and cheese cloth, or a filter bag. Can I put this directly in the tank, or will that be detrimental to the fish? We have 1 Koi, 4 goldfish and 2 plecos in a 55 gallon tank and are planning to upgrade to a bigger tank in the next couple of months. Thanks!

it could be several things you did not mention the type of filter you have.  is the filter large enough for the size tank? 
in order for the charcoal to work it needs water flowing through it therefore it must go into the filter.  need to read the filter instructions to find where the filter bag goes
how often are you doing water changes.  goldfish and koi are known to be "dirty" fish meaning they poop a lot.

stick with the charcoal  no it won't harm your fish if you put it down in your tank water  I got two end's of panty hose's with charcoal & tie the top's & snip half thee excess panty hose top's leaveing just a lil bit to grab  & I putted  1 in each corner in my tank & my 3 fishies have been doing fine there healthy as can be but make sure rinse the panty hoses that has charcoal it elimnates any dust in the charcoal then ya put the panty hose charcoal filled down in your tank & then  woohlllaa!!! your all set  you wanna change the panty filled hose of charcoal every 2 or 3 week's. woohlllaa!!! there ya have it your all set .
