Going to the dentist- any alternatives for injections?

I have a real phobia regarding anything related to injections or needles. Next week I'm supposed to go to the dentist after a long time I haven't visited him because of that phobia.

I'm really scared only from the idea of getting an injection inside my mouth. It is also clear to me that I wouldn't be able to stand the pain involved without anesthesia.

Has anyone had any experience with effective alternative to the old- school injection? Something like Laughing Gas?

Welcome to the club ;-) I have the same phoebia. But, I had a doctor with a nice trick; before the real injection, she used some anasthetic gel on the gums. It is usually used

on children. It comes in different flavors and u don't feel pain during the injection, just a light pressure. Also, I close my eyes just before the injection.
Many doctors now have those lcd glasses, where you can watch a movie while having a dental procedure, and that could ease you and relax you during the procedures.
