Going to the bathroom in one spot

My dog (black lab)  is almost 2 and now that we have a child we want the dog to pee and poop in the same spot in the yard so our son can play on the clean side.  How could we train the dog to do this?

Pets do not normally want to neither do they like to relieve themselves in the area in which they live. If you have a small yard, which is enclosed, this limits the pet to that area and they have no choice but to drop the load so to speak. If you have a kennel, an outer perimeter fence around the kennel is a great way for them to take care of business outside of their living space and helps to cut back substantially on the problem in the yard. Pets are like one of the kids, they need discipline and routine on a daily basis. once they are on a cycle or schedule to do their business at certain times each day, they will get used to the fact that when in the perimeter fence, it's time to go and not after they are released into the yard to run and play.

Jami is right.  You might try getting a "Doggie Doolie", a sort of septic tank for dog waste.  There are enzymes that break down the waste, and it is not smelly.  I got my Rottie to use the area right next to his Doolie, by using a leash when he asked to go out, taking him to the potty spot, hanging out until he pooped, and then praising him.  I also scoop right into the Doolie with him there.  He then gets playtime in the yard.
