Another cold winter day in Chicago! We get used to cold weather here. Still, when I hear about global warming on a day like this, it sounds nice. Of course, it won't be too nice in summer ...
My question is, will global warming raise temperatures in Chicago (or other cold places like New England) during the winter?
Yes and no!
Research on global warming shows an average increase in temperature for the entire year.
But - because of the damage we are doing to our planet the changes in the climate are not only warming but pushing the temps to extremes - so we can expect very high temperatures and very low temperatures.

Thanks, karenett. I wonder ... could this mean that the cold temperatures in a place like Chicago will get even lower, while the hot temperatures in summer will get higher?
I think it could, yes. The term "global warming" is misleading because even if the average temperature of the planet gets higher, some parts will be much warmer but some will get colder. Ocean currents and climate systems, moving heat from the tropics to the rest of the world, will change. I don't know what's going to happen with Chicago specifically, but I think anything could happen.
Thank you, karenett and AlbertE. I appreciate your thoughts about this topic.

Do you not have cold days interspersed with warm days throughout the winter? Be aware of the cold months having several warm days within them. Winter was winter when I was a child in the 1960s. Consistant cold without freak warm days in the middle of winter back then. Global warming is happening where you are.

It is sometimes ironic when it is really cold outside and we read about global warming right? But it’s the reality -- though it is called "global warming" it does not only cover up hot or raise temperature, it also means cold or fall of temperature. Therefore, global warming implies the weather extremities -- too hot and too cold.
Fresh from the fiasco in Copenhagen and with a failure in the U.S. Senate looming this coming year, the climate-change lobby is already shifting to Plan B, or is it already Plan D? Meet the carbon tort. Across the country, trial lawyers and green pressure groups—if that's not redundant—are teaming up to sue electric utilities for carbon emissions under "nuisance" laws (Excerpt) Read more at online.wsj.com
Maeganggreen is correct. Extreme temperature variations occur as a result of global warming. Some areas are exposed to flooding and others to excessive drought. On average there are warmer winters and summers worldwide. The northern polar ice cap, glaciers around the Planet, and Greenland itself show the effects best. As I have mentioned in the past; the strangest effect is temperatures in the 60's in the dead of winter which follow days in the single digits.
