Gift giving at an engagement party

Even though I was just married myself and Ive been to a lot of weddings, I have never been to an engagement party and didnt have one myself.  What is the proper etiquette for gift giving at an engagement party?

When my sister-in-law got engaged we enrolled them (her and her fiancee) both to a gourmet cooking course, they had a lot of fun and the idea was that they would be able to surprise each other with special meals later along the way...

Tough one since you also have to decide on the wedding gift as well. The couple gifts are cool , like enrolling them into courses dancing, cooking, any kind of sport etc.

You can also get them two pairs of bicycles so they can ride together to the future. You can buy them an Astrology analysis based on their names and dates of births I have seen books made on couples.

This couple just stood up in my wedding last month and they were "one of the very few" who actually "took care of us" so I want to give them something nice, but not as expensive as a pair of bicycles! I really love the classes idea like dance class or cooking class, but I would love some more suggestions.  I usually spend a lot on the shower gift and then give cash at the wedding, so I dont want to go over board for the engagement gift.

I buy beautiful jewelry at the 99 cent store for 99 cents.  I buy rings, bracelets, necklaces, etc.  People cannot believe I spent only 99 cents.  Everyone tells me that it looks like I spent a fortune.  The jewelry really looks like I went to Bloomgindales. Lord & Taylors, etc.  So my suggestion is go to the nearest 99 cent store and check out the jewelry.

I really liked the dance / gourmet cooking classes. Thats a really unique idea and its actually pretty inexpensive!  I found a 7 week ballroom dance class close to where the couple lives for only $70.  Thanks to everyone for your ideas but Im going to go with the classes, I think it will be a lot of fun for the couple and they can actually use the lessons for their up coming wedding!

MY inferiority complex isn't as good as YOURS

I think the classes are a great idea. There's also indoor skydiving that's fun but I think it's a bit expensive,or horseback riding for two. However the dance or cooking classes will stick with them forever. You're a good friend,I think they'll be excited over your gift!Happy Holidays!
