Gift Idea's for elder woman don't know very well

I need some ideas of what to get a senior citizen who I volunteer for, for Christmas. I don't know a whole lot about her only meeting with her in social settings and a few times one on one. So things that require personal info (more than a first name) or sizes are out. I was thinking a nice throw blanket but where she lives it is always warm inside. She wears mostly long night shirts inside so she doesn't have to bother with pants (she had one leg amputated) so cant go with slippers or anything of that sort. She doesn't get to go out much due to very little family. She is sound minded but very depressed. So any ideas are welcome! Thanks

geriatriclpnshanna,  How about finding a crafty lady to make you a nice pillow for her?  Have it embroidered on the front.  Put something like "sweet dreams for my friend", or some other appropriate words.  Have some pretty ruffles added all around it.  I think she would like something like that from you.  You sound like a very special lady.

I would suggest the gift of time, if you are willing.

Visit a while. Listen to her talk, look at photo albums, do a jigsaw puzzle. Ask her about her life. Talk about her favorite recipes or what she remembers of the war, etcetera.

If you cannot do that, or are not willing to, give her something she can use.

Postage stamps and stationery if she writes letters. A prepaid phone calling card, if she telephones people. Perhaps a certificate to her favorite grocery store would be a nice idea.

Don't be afraid to think outside the box - or to give of yourself!

Instant Person-Just add coffee.

You mentioned that she has very little family and doesn't get out much.  I can't tell from your posting whether she uses a wheel chair, or if she can walk to get out, but maybe she would just enjoy an outing somewhere which could include a lunch. If she has any Christmas gifts to buy for anyone, maybe you could help her do some shopping.  I would imagine that the time you spend with her would be much more appreciated than any gift you could give her.  I agree with the above, you are very special, caring person.

Sylvia, I would give things they can use. Here are some possibles:

Postage stamps. Light bulbs. Magnifying glass. Book of crossword puzzles. Box of facial tissues. Hard candies. Gift card to the grocer or druggist. Prepaid phone card. Public transportation card. Taxicab voucher. Gift certificate to the beauty salon or barber shop. A lap throw. Oven mitt or pot holder. Tea bags. A no-spill coffee mug.

Just remember, sometimes the greatest gift of all is the gift of yourself. Take the time to visit and to listen. Offer help when you can. Rides to the store or to the doctor's office are usually greatly appreciated, but the thing that is most often valued is the thing that is the easiest to give and most often overlooked.

Friendship.
