What is the population of Ghana?

One of the most exciting things about Ghana was the hiking trails at the various rural eco-tourist projects that we visited for the project. The landscape and biodiversity is so varied that it is an awe inspiring experience just to walk and take in the surroundings.

There are fantastic specimens of centipedes and millipedes that can be found while hiking in Ghana. Some varieties of millipedes secrete toxins through the chitin plates that protect their body and if ingested could prove to be quite serious. One millipede that we came across in Kakum National Park during a guided was nearly 6 inches long. The tour started in Mosomogor, an isolated rural community that host eco-tourist attractions. The community members of Mosomogor have constructed a tree canopy platform on which visitors can camp through the night in the jungle. Additionally, Mosomogor is home to the Bamboo Orchestra which offers an incredible chance to see a blend of traditional and contemporary dancing and to hear traditional instrumentation. As well, other millipedes and centipedes were found at Kintampo waterfalls, Wli waterfalls and on the Helekpe mountain hike.

ACCRA, Ghana, 29 September 2008 UNICEF Ambassador Hayley Westenra visited Ghana last week to see for herself the critical need for safe water and education for some of the worlds poorest children. Ms. Westenra, 21, an internationally renowned singer from New Zealand, is UNICEF's youngest-ever Goodwill Ambassador. She last visited Ghana in 2005. Visiting a Guinea worm containment centre in Savelugu, northern Ghana, Ms. Westenra saw firsthand the terrible impact drinking water contaminated with Guinea worm has on children. Once the water-borne worms get into childrens bodies, they can grow up to a metre in length and create painful swelling and blisters. UNICEF has been providing safe drinking water and hygiene education as part of the effort to combat Guinea worm. The parasite has a disproportionate impact on children under age 16, as they are more likely to play in or drink from infected water sources. Significant progress has been made, however, in reducing the incidence of Guinea worm in Ghana. In 1989 there were almost 180,000 reported cases, but the annual total is now down to a small fraction of that figure. The Ficus tree is truly amazing in that it positions itself advantageously on an existing tree and after successive years of growing it essentially out-competes or 'strangles' the original host so that the interior core will eventually hollow out (what used to be the host decays). The living giant ficus remains as a web-like cylinder towering where the original tree once stood. Many areas protected for eco-tourism in Ghana contain the giant ficus trees as they are usually sought after as a curiousity.
