Getting a three-year-old off his sippy cup

My son is three years old and still uses sippy cup for drinking. He refuses to use a normal cup or even a straw. Is this normal? I'm a bit worried it could hurt his teeth. How can I convince him to stop using his sippy cup?

"Occam's Razor, Laplace's Demon"

I worker at auniversity lab school and we took infants off sippy cups at 6 months old.  The trick is to make sure they can be successful. Put only small amounts in at a time so he or she will be less likely to spill. If they do it will only be a little bit.  Also, to make it easier on yourself, a rule about only eating and drinking when sitting down at the table will reduce the need for a sippy cup.

Before you worry and before you look for ways to change his habbits, ask a dentist. Maybe there's nothing to worry about.

Hmmm.... I thought it was common knowledge that sippy cups and pacifiers are bad for the teeth. Is that not the case?

I think sippy cups are different than pacifires. I'm not saying they're good, I'm saying it's worth to ask someone who knows.

Other than that, I'd start with estublishing house rules, like using the sippy cup only before going to bed and during meals, or using it only while at home or any other rule that seems right to you as a start. We did that with the pacifire - and so far it helps to ease the addiction (our rule: only in bed and in the car).

 Good luck.

Thanks Orna. Sounds like it's worth trying. It's not going to be easy, though Undecided

Hi Hulio, honestly I have no children and haven't actually experienced what you're describing. I do however watch a lot of TV, and one of the reality shows is about a professional very experienced nanny who comes to houses, stays for a week and changes the life of the family, concentrating on the kids' beahviour of course. In one of the shows, all 3 kids in the family - who ages range between 2-6 (!!) years all still use a sippy cup. i recall the nanny opening like 5 drawers filled with thousands of sippy cups :) Anyway - she immediately decided no more sippy cups and the way to do it really is simply cold turkey... just take it away. The kids naturally cry and cry and get mad, but you tell them they are grown ups now, and no more sippy cup and after a day or two they drink out of real grown-up glasses :)

Again - this is from a TV show :) so if i were you, i would consult some more.

 Good luck!
