Getting rid of buzzing sound on car stereo

Just bought a car with a fairly decent stero system in it, but it emits a slight buzzing sound when the system is on.  Its not loud, but its loud enough to be annoying when I play music at low volumes.  how do I get rid of it?

p.s. - the system has a couple of amplifiers and it used to have a subwoofer (which I removed, becuase with it the buzz was even worse)

If when you rev your engine the noise increases, try putting a capacitor on the alternator. This way the noise from the alternator will be reduced.
