Getting pregnant after an abortion

When I was 17, I got pregnant by mistake and had an abortion. I'm now 25 and have been trying to conceive for the past two years. Is it because of the abortion that I can't get pregnant?

Two years is a long time to be trying to conceive at your age. It's unlikely that the abortion you had has anything to do with it. Consult with a fertility specialist who should recommend testing both for you and for your partner.

Good luck!
Rachel

P.S. If you feel you're having emotional issues that have to do with the abortion, this may be a good time to go for counseling to work through them.

Hi, in general abortions do not reduce your chances of becoming pregnant again. The best thing to do is go speak to your OBGYN who can do several tests to see what the cause of your infertility is.

Here you can find a lot of information on fertility and infertility as well as more explanations on abortions.

My dear There are plenty of reasons why you did not succeed in conceiving, all of them can be successfully treated but you'll have to see agynecologist in order to proceed from here. In general, uneventful abortion SHOULD NOT cause any problems. Good luck

The inability to conceive may or may not be related to the earlier abortion. It all depends upon the age of the fetus at the time of abortion as it will be a decisive factor in deciding as which method to use for abortion, and if the method used was not very invasive then it (abortion) may not be of much relevance.

However some times due to some complication during abortion, later in life there may be blockage of tubes thereby preventing normal passage of ovum.

At times during overenthusiastic curettage there may be damage to the inner lining of the uterus. It is a well known fact that there is a minimum thickness of the endometrium or the endometrial bed which is required to sustain the embryo.

If there is a failure to conceive  then you need to be investigated and before you undergo any investigation, your partner should get his semen examined for sperm count and their motility. If that is within normal limits then you should proceed with your investigations.
