George W. Bush and renewable energy

George W. Bush as made a nice U-turn regarding renewable energy lately. Peole have been talking about reducing America's dependency on oil for years now, but GWB was thought to be an ally of the oil companies and didn't do anything to encourage Americans to move to alternative fuels, until very recently. What made him change his attitude? The ongoing war in Iraq? The situation with Iran? Why now? Is there more to it than meets the eye? Was he simply, as unlikely as it may sound, acting sensibly?

I'm pretty sure that his motivations are not altruistic, or for the greater good. Either it is a popularity thing (he thinks this will make him look better in the eyes of the public) or there are financial considerations involved...

Well I have a prespective which might be unique. I am a fiscal conservative social moderate anit libertarian. My view on this is that Pres Bush was not the ally of the oil industry he was branded to be. Due to his backgroud left wing groups were successful in labeling him as a pawn of the oil industry. From 2000 till now Bush if anything has been pro nuke, not pro oil. He has been pushing for more nuke plants and clean coal tech.

Bush has been putting more emphasis on clean tech due to recent events. I for one do not like Pres Bush of most of his policies, but I do agree with initatives on energy (drill in Alaska, and off the coast, clean coal and nuke). Sadly liberal Democrats have been blocking these needed steps just because of their distaste for the President.
