What are the best webhosting servers and how....

Other than Geocities, are there any similar and reliable, freestyle webspaces (free to very low cost) AND what is the easiest and/or fastest way to transfer several files to a different server?

Geocities has stopped taking new accounts. I don't know if that means they are becoming a paid only service or not.

They say on their website it is because of - I'm guessing, in part - having 'to provide extra user tools' which to me, seems like they are either going paid only or completely cancelling all accounts.

Most newer webservers that I've looked into that aren't pro, don't leave very much room for personal customization and none make it possible to transfer files.

Is the Geocities style of service becoming obsolete?
