Genealogy resources

Which websites, books, or other sources do you recommend to research family history?  There are many genealogy sites and groups -- I'm curious which ones you think are helpful.

I've realized you're from Hawaii, so I found a specific website database that can be a great start. In those kind of searches it's best to find the most specific website for your region.

There are several:

Cyndi's List is free and contains all sorts of links to just about any kind of genealogical source.

ancestry.com costs an arm and a leg (in my opinion) for the "good stuff"' lots of resources

familysearch is put out by the Mormon Church.  They have a comprehensive database of names.

Geneanet is one that I also use.  It's kind of a genealogical networking site.

I hope this is helpful to you.  Best of luck in your searches!!

There is this library in Houston, Texas called the Clayton Library for Genealogical Research located at 5300 Caroline Street. Here is their website: http://www.hpl.lib.tx.us/clayton/.  Even though it is in Houston, they have a "how to " section to help you determine what you need to do as well as some web sites you can find online that could help you get started.

My family is from Sicily, and I was able to track them down to their arrival at Ellis Island.

Good luck to your finding your heritage.

Maybe they can help you get started.

Hello Technophil,

I recommend www.familysearch.org, www.genealogybank.com, and www.footnote.com, along with Dick Eastman's genealogy blog at
www.eogn.com. These are in addition to Ancestry.com, which has already been mentioned and which I too find helpful.

 Best Regards,

Lane R. Ellis

Ancestry.com is well worth the cost.
