Our experience is that 50% of our woodworking students are girls. Only about 10% take auto and welding. We make a real effort to encourage them, they are always in the top half of the class in marks.

annectdotally, my answer is yes.  my stepdaughter went into auto mechanics and took several semesters of "shop" at several different schools.  she was the ONLY female student in any of them...she was also one of the best!  she has gone on to get jobs at a few local auto dealers, who were very impressed with her skills.  perhaps the fact that she is good looking didn't hurt her opportunities for getting hired.  i have been affiliated with many many schools that don't even offer wood shop any longer...even in schools that still have all of the facilities.
