Gays in the Military

Do you think gays should be able to serve openly in the U.S. military? Tell us why or why not -- and keep the discussion civil, please.

Absolutely, gays should be able to serve in the military without danger of being discharged.  I served 10 years on active duty in the Coast Guard and left because I feared being found out and dragged through the humiliation of a discharge.  I was an E-6, filling an E-7 slot.  My last proficiency evaluation was at the top of the scale.  Now, as I prepare to retire, I have lost my military retirement because of this discrimination.  Thanks for reading and hopefully, understanding.

The mission of the United States Military is to deal with our nation's enemies.

It is not the mission to act as a social experiment.

What we have has worked pretty well so far. I see no reason to fix something that is not broken.

Wow........Really tough question. When you label it as a gay rights agenda, I believe the majority of Americans will be against it. If it is labelled as allowing gays to serve openly in the military without fear of judicial reprisal I believe it would be allowed. I served 10 years in the Marine Corps, I knew of only a couple of guys who were gay during my tenure. To be blatant they were ostracized, I know everyone says the culture has changed, but unless the Marines have become some gentle hug and kiss organization, I cannot fanthom why any homosexual would want to serve. The Marines are fighting men and women, if your sexual orientation is going to be an issue then they are better off without you. ANY issue that takes away from the combat oriented mission of the Corps should be dealt with quickly decisively and in true Marine Corps fashion. IF allowed to serve you better know why you are there. If being gay is a problem.......stay home.

I would have to disagree with allowing gays to openly serve in the military. I actually oppose it because too many ethical and legal policies would have to be changed. The only real reason why our government is really even contemplating this question is that allowing gays to serve in the military would close the gaps in troop strength and thus not have to depend on a possible draft. I am in support of a draft to close the gaps in troop strength but not doing it by allowing gays to join.

The ethical and legal hurdles involved in allowing the gays to openly join the military are:

1. If we allow men and women to marry in the military, then that means we would have to allow members of the same sex to get married.

2. The Uniform Code of Military Justice would have to change their legal standpoint on sodomy.

3. All the equal opportunity policies would have to be changed.

4.  Promotion regulations would have to be changed so that gays would get a fair chance at promotion boards.

I could go on and on but I think you all know where I'm coming from.  It's too much of a headache!!!!!

No.  The military is fine with that policy, and it should stay that way.  I would rather know someone was not gay next to me showering and working.  Keep it to yourself, and it works great that way

As a 14 year Veteran, I think not. One of my responsibilities was the assignment of s;eeping and bathing situation's. I also spent time as a Recruiter. Everybody deserves the right to think they live in safety from sexual harassment, being forced to shower with a person who's "Homosexual" when you're not (and visa versa)is harassment itself. Privacy is very limited in many field's and activities undertaken by the military. If we could find a way to deliver privacy all the time to all service members, then it would be do able. Until then, you're not going to be able to serve the human right's and dignity of all concerned.
