What I do in Lincoln, Nebraska, is that I put it on Craig's List (which is FREE) under the heading "Garage Sales". But most important and what has worked the greatest for us is we put signs up. IF you are able to do this in your town (check with your citytown's city government about where you can put signs) we will use a sturdy cardboard of some sort, write SALE, address location, in BIG BOLD letters and put them on a stake and then place them at corners of the busier streets pointing to our g-sale. IF, the property that you want to put the sign on is another person's home or a business, ASK before you put up. This is very important. Then, we've made arrows down the roadway on the same kind of cardboard or posterboard, that eventually get to our address. When the garage sale is over, you MUST take the signs down RIGHT AWAY. This is not only a courtesy to the property owner, it's also stops additional people from ringing your doorbell after the sale is over. PLUS, if the signs are old they are an eyesore.
Make sure your signs have BIG BOLD lettering. Don't put too much wording on the signs. People can't read them fast enough.
Craig's List is free. Our newspaper charges A LOT for a garage sale add so we don't even go there. Make sure on Craig's List that you put the address, the dates, and the times of your sale. I've also aded a list (short list) highlighting some of the items for sale. Some even add pictures.
I love Craig's List. I sold my house in 9 days (without a realtor) last fall by putting it on Craig's List.
Best of Luck!
