What is the proper way to refer to oneself when writing? Some people will write, "john likes softball and football." I THINK IT SHOUL BE, "I LIKE SOFTBALL AND FOOBALL."
It totally depends on what you're writing. When you are writing a formal paper, it is less correct to use the first person. The first person is like what you said, "I love the dog....." What is more correct is to refer to yourself as another person or speak in the passive. "The dog is very loved." I hope this helps.
