I live in a '70's Ranch w/the dreaded sunken- in ...

I live in a '70's Ranch w/the dreaded sunken- in about 1-ft empty space above the kitchen cabinets. The space is obviously wasted. If I was to install new cabinets it seems like the top ones would still be too high, but at least they would be enclosed and not collect dust and grease. This article mentions building shelves, but does not link instructions. Does anyone know of any EASY diy plans for such? Thanks! Karen P.S. Why doesn't this let you backspace when you make a typo?
