Friend in a major slump

I have a friend who I believe is falling into a major depression. She's not eating and is way too skinny. She's completely negative about everything about herself and literally sits at home and cries all day. She says she hates her family, and has no friends, and tries to fake being happy so that people will 'tolerate' her. I've been trying to talk to my friend, trying to make her feel better, tell her that I think she is a strong, beautiful, funny and amazing woman. I've been trying to get her to come out with me and my friends so that she can meet new people and start to enjoy herself, but she just wont have any of it. It's starting to get to the point now where I almost don't have the energy for it anymore. What do I do? How do I help my friends get out of this major slump?

I am sorry to report that no matter what you do you will not succeed. It is possible she will come out of it on her own but that is not possible in the immediate future. The only way to deal with depression is through medication prescribed by a psychiatrist. Accompany her to one and let her begin treatment as soon as possible.

A positive attitude may not solve all your problems, but it will annoy enough people to make it worth the effort.

The best thing you can do is to continue to be a friend. You can suggest counseling as that will definitely help, but it's likely she will not take to this suggestion. When she's ready to get professional help, she will, but don't put pressure on her.

May I recommend her reading

Feeling Good, The New Mood Therapy (revised & updated) by David D. Burns, M.D.  I just purchased the book & it has opened my eyes.  I use to be a Happy Go Lucky person but back in October, my job caused me to go into major depression & anxiety.  Hope this will be of some help.
