Free public records searches?

How / where does one go about conducting free public records searches?

Many websites online advertise "free public records searches" but there always seems to a fee at the end. Is there such a thing as a free public records search online?

It's not going to be easy to find free public records searches online, here's why:

A common misconception is that because information is available to the public (offline) then it should be free. In most cases, however, there are offline search fees, copy fees, material costs, administration etc. And this does not include the costs of putting the information online.

Private companies take the time to search from a big pool of resources i.e. court records, county records, change of address records, property records, business records, phone records etc.  they then assemble and order the info, and finally put it online, for which they charge a fee.

Because they have a greater pool of resources you also stand a better chance of finding complete information - compared to you manually searching only one, ex. county records, of the many they search.

Most people end paying to use the online public records searches , including myself.
It's convenient, saves loads of personal time, and ends up being a lot cheaper than physically driving to various government buildings, waiting for hours in numerous queues, and then you still end up paying a fee for the information anyway - which is rarely complete.

The crowd I usually use are Gov public records searches , I find them to be the best i.e. they have the largest pool of information, the process is very fast, and 9/10 times they have the complete info I'm looking - remember this is not an exact science.

Anyway, I hope that clears the free public records searches anomaly! :-)

Good luck with your searches.

Cheers.

Yes, Indiana is spot on, it's really not worth the hassles of trying to manually search for public records. Just ones time spent, driving around, waiting in queues, waiting in wrong queues, being told you have the wrong department/building/city , and eventually you get the information and it's wrong anyway, plus you still had to pay for it , aaarrgh....

No thanks - I tried that once, now I rather pay than try to "save" a few pennies with free public records searches.

And all these websites that advertise free public records searches they ALWAYS end up being a pay site. Makes you want to scream!

Good luck with the searches.

Free public records searches?

A company invests time and money in a risky marketplace to gather and market and present information and I think they deserve to be paid for it?

Then invest your money in getting the info you want, the same way they did. Go get to work, it shouldn't be so hard, right? Or is your time worth something and theirs isn't?

Free Public records covers a lot of territory.. if you mean one site with all public records, of all kinds it is very unlikely you will find it for free.

The reason is that it costs THEM to accumulate  and store the information online. That is the reason why he best ones are pay service.
You also have to be explicit to the type of record. Births and deaths are not public records. They ARE govt records, but restricted for security/ risk of id theft. Historical ones can be found, in some cases.

Hope this helps
