Unfortunately I don't have good news (well it's not all bad) but it won't be easy to find free public records searches online, this is because:
A quite common misnomer is that information which is "available" to the general public i.e. by the free information act, should then be free. Realistically , most of the times there are offline labor fees, material costs, administration etc. And I'm only referring to offline information, of course there is a large cost involved in putting the information up online.
The private companies who charge a fee for providing information have taken the time (and expenses) to draw from a big pool of government resources, namely court records, county records, phone records, prison records, birth and death certificates, change of address records, property records, business records etc. They then sort and group all the the info (no small task), and finally load it online.
Because these companies draw their data from such a large pool of resources this means you stand a better chance of finding complete information - if you had to search all this yourself, one by one, ex. starting from county records, it would take a very long time, and many bureaucratic gray hairs later.
For this reason most people rather pay to use the online public records searches , (including myself). It's very convenient, saves loads of time, a lot cheaper than physically driving to all the various government buildings, waiting for hours in queues, and still paying a fee for the information anyway - which is rarely complete.
The company I use are Gov public records searches , I have found them to be the best i.e. they have the largest directory of information, it's a very fast process, and 9 times out of 10 they have the complete information - remember this is not an exact science.
I hope I have helped clear up the free public records searches contradiction! :-)
All the best and good luck with your searches.
