Sure, Youtube is good, it's kind of hit and miss, but there are some free guitar lessons for beginners. Some use their videos for pimping stuff some don't, get out what you can.

But the best online beginner guitar lessons is Jamorama by Ben Edwards.

It's an ebook - it's not free, but it sure is much much cheaper than private lessons, and saves a whole lot of wasted time searching the internet and going through the various promises of free lessons - that always have a catch.

The great thing about this ebook is that it has the advantage of video, you can see and hear what you need to play and exactly How you have to play it.

There are instructions on how to read guitar music including simple guitar tabs, chord progressions, styles and techniques of strumming, insider tips on how to play in a band, ear training, how to tune yaour guitar, etc. etc. and 12 months worth of lessons ! Including favorite song video lessons.

You can find more info at Jamorama guitar lessons online .

It's important that beginners start with correct instruction, mistakes are easy to correct early on but once they become ingrained it can be very tough to overcome them.

I hope that helps you,
I know you were looking for free guitar lessons for beginners online, but some times it's worth paying a little to get started correctly.
Cheers.

I learned initially by using many sites. Mostly with - youtube...

Unfortunately I never stuck with it, I ended up more confused and frustrated, think it may have helped if I had of settled on one teaching style?

I'm not a guitar professional just a fun! - I have downloaded a free Guitar lesson from Play the Guitar Site. They have very easy step by step lessons - in my opinion.

Also, it's always a good idea to search youtube for some nice free video lessons.

There's lots of guitar software out there, but I don't remember seeing one that works as you describe. You'd need a midi- capable guitar, and at minimum one of those old Casio DG-100s, and as I recall playing one of those did not exactly duplicate playing a real guitar.
