YOu can try some genealogy sites - to give you the date of death, and the state the person lived in when they got their Social Security card, and perhaps also the state or city they lived in when they died. The most recent records are more complete.

Four states (Arizona, Missouri, Utah and West Virginia) have online digitized copies of some of their death certificates available downloading - these are for roughly the first half of the 20th Century (coverage varies by state). However, there are quite a few death INDEXES online, including the Social Security Death Index.

there ARE accurate, free death records web sites out there. It depends on the state.

Some US Gen Web county level sites have BMD data; some don't.
Some states have genealogy data on-line; some don't. Missouri is almost as good as West Virginia for that, and Illinois has an on-going project to get marriages on-line.
