Free Wesley Snipes!

Anybody want to join me in a "Free Wesley Snipes" campaign?

Look, tax evasion is not good ... but a sentence of 3 years??  There are violent criminals who don't get 3 years!  I think Wesley Snipes was misguided ... but he shoudn't get hard time.

Snipes evaded taxes to the tune of a very large sum of money.  If anything, his sentence was too mild.  If someone embezzeled an equal sum from, say, a bank, you can be sure that authorities would throw the book at him or her.  Why should the well-heeled and famous be treated more lightly.

Incidentally, the government likes to go after big names in order to send a message to the general public to refrain from tax cheating.  This case was a perfect vehicle.

Your income is personal property. The gov shouldn't have the right to take 40% of a person’s property. Next they will mandate what food to eat (wait... they already did that with transfat oil) and what to drink (wait... they don't let LEAGLE ADULTS drink beer). The 16th amendment was never ratified and the income tax is a voluntary tax! FREE SNIPES

Taxes are the price we pay for a civilized society.  Further, we all should pay our fair share, which can only be assured if the government enforces collection.  I have no sympathy for the greedy Snipes, who is wealthy and evidently lives like a king.

Tennisguy is correct. Society does have a price tag, this is understood and I accept it completely. The group as a whole should pay for these “societal services” instead of only the richest people. A flat tax or a type of consumption tax should replace the income tax. Texas and Florida have no income tax and they have larger economies then most countries. If we continue taxing the successful people we take away the motivation that makes America great (that anyone can be a success) and turn down the socialistic path of redistribution of wealth.  Free Snipes!
