Free Legal Directories places to list my website as a lawyer

I am a lawyer who is just starting out my practice. I practice criminal defense law including dwi/dui, felonies, assault, misdemeanors, juvenille crime, etc...

I just created my website and wanted to know what free legal directories I should get my law firm's website listed in. I don't have a lot of money, but want to get started with some search engine marketing and driving traffic to my site. I looked at Google's adwords, but I am a little intimidated by pay per click. I would rather take a slower approach and build my website up by having it listed in various legal directories. Perhaps there are other websites I should be listed on besides free legal directories? I know it takes a long time to rise to the top of google, and I am patient.

I would submit your site to Targetlaw. This is actually a lawyer search engine that only has lawyer websites. It is free to submit I believe, although there are some editors that look at your website to make sure that you are a lawyer website and not just a spamming directory. I think that this is free. This is a great way to start to getting web traffic to you site.
Other free legal directories include walshlaw I believe. Findlaw and Lawyers.com are not free, but it might not be a bad idea to be listed in these lawyer directories. both of these directories allow you to list for a lot of practice areas including: family law, criminal law, intellectual property, copyright, trademark, dwi, real estate etc.

Either way, being listed in a legal directory is only part of the

Targetlaw is really good. I used it a week or 2 ago to search for a lawyer so I would submit there as the one person posted earlier. I don't know much about lawyer search engine submissions etc. but I do have experience in internet marketing. I can tell you a few others to consider. Try submitting to googledmoz, verizon superpages and yahoo yellow pages.

When submitting your site to these directories do the following. Use what is called anchor tagging or keyword tagging. If you are a personal injury lawyer perhaps you use personal injury as an anchor. Let me show you using targetlaw. Targetlaw is a Lawyer search tool so perhaps they will use lawyer search that links back to their site. This is really good for tagging and gives you a better chance to show up for certain terms. When submitting to directories do the same. Good anchor tags help out with search engine optimization.

Hope this helps you!

Glad to see that you used Targetlaw. I don't see why any attorney would not submit their website to this

free lawyer search engine while many are paying hundreds of dollars per month to be listed in lawyer directories such as Lawers.com and Findlaw.

I am somewhat savvy with SEO so let me start by telling you that in order to gain seo it is important to draw links from other sites into your site, but only draw links that are relevant to your practice areas. For instance, people here are mentioning targetlaw as a site to submit your link. If this is the case consider doing anchor text aka using text that relates to your site. I will provide you with an example, this is a link that is good TargetLaw but this type of link is much better (anchor tag) Lawyer Search This is considered anchor text. Now for your site perhaps you draw a link by submitting phrase like Criminal Lawyer, DWI Lawyer etc. and link back to your site. For better link exchange draw links into different pages of your site.

DMOZ is a must. Submit there as well as yahoo yellow pages, verizon superpages, and free law directories which you can do a search on google and find them. I would also search on your competitions links by putting in their URL in google to see who they are linked to obviously if they are number one on the search engines.

Lastly, make sure you title tag, use some meta tags and good content density for each page of your website. If you do all of the above you will be ahead of the game.

Targetlaw is good. Also, most free directories have a legal section with specific sub-categories where you could list your site.
