Flying Cars

(This question is loosely based on an IBM commercial from the year 2000).  The question is -- why the hack don't we have Flying Cars?  like the ones they promised us that we will have "in the next century", like the ones we see on movies like Sixth Element?  we have the technology, they put a man on the moon some 40 years ago, there are traffic jams everywhere -- what happened to Flying Cars?  and more important: is there ANY company that is working on this product right now ??  (and if not, why not??)

Yes, there's a company working on a flying car - http://www.moller.com/

Personally I think it would be a disaster. We have enough lousy drivers bumping into each other,  we don't need lousy pilots to fall on us from the sky. The solution to transport problems is good public transportation and good urban planning, nothing else.

The technology for such a thing is a bit more complex than just driving a car. Imagine how long it took the car companies to reach a point where cars are very safe.

Now try thinking how long does it take to train a commertial airline pilot and until what point they actually let him/her fly the plane as a captain. It takes a long time because the damage potential is very large.

With a flying car you can take a house down if you bump into it from the air.

I think it will take a couple more years to reach to a point where the safety of such flying cars will be good enough.

In addition to that, consider the ramifications on the environment. Current commercial planes pollute quite a bit and if the skies will be filled with lots of tiny flying cars. There is a need to find a clean power source for these cars (which, of course, will need more power than you average car) as well, before mass producing them.
