Fixing a leaking shower faucet

I watched and followed your instructions about Fixing a Leaky Faucet. I am fixing the leak in my shower. It is a single handle to turn on the shower - pull out to turn on - turn left and right for hot and cold. After i removed the face plate and saw the stem. I am unable to remove the stem because there is a sleeve over the stem. I cannot get a tool inside the sleeve to turn the stem to remove. Can you please advise me what to do remove the stem.
