Fireplace conversion?

I am buying a house built in 1910. It has two fireplaces, one downstairs and one upstairs. The chimney has been capped off and i want to use the fireplaces as heat sources. The gas lines are capped off throughout the house. What can I do whether woodburning, gas or electric? I think that I would rather go with electric.
