Fingernail Stripes

my mother has dark lines under her fingernails, all are different sizes. They kind of look like stripes. I have them and my daughter does too. I don't know why and I dont know what to say to my daughter when she asks why. Has anyone seen this before? They go up and down on the nail varying in darkness.

I searched many websites until finally one gave me pictures and and explanation because I wanted to be sure it wasn't being confused with something else. I don't remember what website it was but they said that it was fairly common in darker skinned individuals. So I went around asking other people to see their nails. Many people had them and did not even know it. So I guess its just like freckles, some people have it and some don't.
