Far away in the sunshine are my highest aspirations. I may not reach them, but I can look up and see their beauty, believe in them, and try to follow where they lead.

Finance: Loans to start a new school?

I want to start a non-profit special school that focuses on leadership development and the environment.  How do I go about applying for funding?  Would I be applying for a personal loan, or are there special loans for projects like this?  Any help would be greatly appreciated!  Thanks.

What a great idea! I wish all the best with this.

A great place for you to start building upon this idea is to consult with a SCORE counselor. They provide free advice, support and have many services to offer entrepreneurs.

Once you start with them, they will more than likely guide you to the SBA (small business administration) they also have a very helpful website.

These are the two sites that most new business owners garner the most support and information from.

Good luck and best wishes in all you do.

Try applying for grants instead of loans.  Unlike a loan a grant doesn't have to be paid back, so more of the money you make will go towards the projects you are developing instead of paying back your debt.

Try person to person lending also, like Zopa.com, or Prosper.com.  Do a google- Search under person to person lenders.  You will have good luck with these if you have a good credit score...unlike me who is still after a year looking for financing for a business I bought.  Grants.gov is the main source for grants.  Its the melting pot for grants.  IDea cafe has many sources and information as well.  If you are a non-profit you can go to Nonprofitexperts.com, www.idealist.org or foundationcenter.org has a library of resources for individuals, corporations and small businesses.  But the easiest one for links for non-profits  is www.bigdatabase.com.  Good luck!
