Filtered water

I heard that filtered water which was filtered with a carbon filter (such as brita) are more acidic than non-filtered water, maybe even harmful. Is it true?

A molecule of water is composed of 2 atoms of hydrogen and 1 atom of oxygen (H20). Chemically, this can also be considered as H-OH, where the single H is acidic and the OH is basic (or alkaline). Pure water has neutral pH, since the amount of H is balanced by a equal number of OH. However most water is not pure, it contains other elements, such as minerals. These minerals will react with the water and change the pH. A filtre such as Brita does not distill the water, it merely removes some of the added minerals etc that are present in the water. As a result the pH of the water changes. In many places ( Israel, for example) the water is very alkaline, so filtering the water can cause it to become more acidic. However the change is very small, and anyway since water is such a mild acid I doubt that it can do any harm. The water is probably healthier after filtering out all the junk, even if it is a bit more acidic.

I don't know how acidic filtered water is, but I'm sure it's not as acidic as Coca-Cola.

I stopped using Brita for several reasons:

  1. I almost always forgot to refill the tank, and many times I got stuck with no cold water at home, but just tap-temperature water.
  2. Since I always refilled the tank and immediately put it in the fridge, I seldom had the chance to give it a good cleaning, therefore let all kinds of life forms develop in the upper moist plastic part - that's much worse than drinking not filtered water.
  3. I almost always forgot to buy new filters and replace the old ones, so the Brita use was quite ineffective.
  4. The filter isn't that cheap, so I decided I'd rather buy mineral water and save myself all the trouble of taking good care of the Brita.

If you're as oblivious as I tend to be (regarding the Brita - I'm not like that with other stuff), you might wanna take into consideration the issues I mentioned above, before starting to use the Brita or similar filters.

Actually, all fizzy drinks like coca cola contain carbonic acid (H2CO3) which is formed when carbon dioxide is dissolved in water (carbon dioxide is the gas in coca cola that makes it fizzy). And that is in addition to other weak or low concentrations of acids like citric acid, phosphric acid and who knows what else...
