Fillers or fat injections for hollow eyes?

I initially wanted to have my hollow eyes filled with Restylane, or any other type of compatable filler. However, I found a surgeon that recommmnded to inject fat (taken from my thighs) to replace volume in my slightly hollow appearing eyes. What are the side effects? Any risks with this procedure? How long will the results last? Are fillers not as good? Thanks in advance.

I do not recommend fillers or fat injections around the eyes-both are BLIND procedures involving injecting with a needle around the eye-this puts the eyeball at risk.

In addition both techniques can cause lumps around the eye and most people are unhappy with the result-in my experience.

I use a laser incision on the inside of the eyelid and reposition or directly graft the fat into the proper position-this gives a beautiful, accurate smooth result and is much safer.

Fat injections around the eyes are never done with needles. They are done with blunt canulas, and there is no risk to the eye in skilled hands. Lumps in this area are because the injections are done in too shallow of a location.

Dr Seckel, I had fat injection fillers under my eyes 6 months ago in combination with a complete facial procedure (neck, jaw line, eyes, and eyebrows). Within 3 weeks I developed HUGE bags of fat localized under the eyes and the cheeks. I look like a sick frog. The skin is very tender to the touch and when pressure is applied the liquid or the fat moves around. They are so big that I look now by far much older than before the facial surgery. The Dr. told me to wait and see. Is it possible to have a reverse liposuction done and remove the injected fat? What will the side effects be? Do you have any other suggestion? I am desperated. thanks, Jackie, the frog

Any injection around the eyelids, fat or fillers is dangerous, complications are often permanent and I strongly advise against injecting any material to correct dark circles under the eyes.

In my opinion liposuction in this area close to the eye is risky and complete removal of the grafted fat without creating a contour deformity is very difficult.

In my experience I have had good results by directly removing the fat grafts through a small laser incision on the inside of the eyelid

Fillers in the infraorbital hollows (under the eyes) can be safely performed in skilled hands. You may wish to locate an oculofacial plastic surgeon in your area who can offer a consultation.

In my practice, patients do very well with fillers in this area such as restylane, juvederm, or perlane. It is a good option before performing fat grafting or orbital fat redraping because it is not permanent.
