Federal prison inmate locator / search?

Does anybody know the best way to perform a Federal prison inmate locator search?

Do you know of any helpful government websites or private resources with countrywide data bases where one can do a federal prison inmate locator search?

In order to do a reliable federal prison inmate locator search you will first need to know if the inmate is in a federal , state or county prison , and of course which state the prisoner is in.

If you do not know which state the prisoner is in you may have to check all 3 (federal, state and county prison) for each state!! This is because government departments limit their information to their own respective states (quite understandably) and also there is no one central free web site that has gathered, sorted and uploaded the combined information for all the States.

Only if you perform a paid search will you then have access to information from all states across the country. This will include info from both government And private sources. Also, some private inmate search websites will use additional databases from court records, county records, arrest records etc. This means that your chances of finding correct and complete information is much higher and your time spent searching much less.

If you do decide to do a private search then some things to note are:

1) Some websites advertise a free federal prison inmate locator search , but it's usually only the search that is free, you still have to pay for the report!

2) Reputable websites have a once-off fee which grants you membership for a year and as many searches as you like, AND as many types of searches as you like (divorce records, property records, arrest records etc.) If a website wants to charge for each individual search then steer well clear.

For my own private searches I use Federal Prison Inmate Locator , they have a very large data base of information and their reports are fast. My past experiences with them have been good - they have supplied complete and accurate information.

All the best and I hope that helps with your federal prisoner inmate locator search.

Cheers

Hi Carrie,

I recommend you start at the People Ferret free Inmate Search and Locator page here: http://www.peopleferret.com/free-inmate-search.htm

Since you're looking for a Federal inmate, you can start with the topmost "Federal USA Inmate Search" link, it's a government site managed by the Federal Bureau of Prisons. If the prisoner you're trying to find is in a state state prison or county jail, then you'll need to start your search by choosing the applicable state that you either believe or know that the inmate is located in.

There are also prison forum and prison blog links at the bottom of the page if you want to read more about what other people are saying and doing as related to federal and state or county inmates etc.

Wishing you the best on your search,

Traveling Girl

In Texas you can look up inmates by name at the states DOC website. Search for your states Department of Corrections website and see if you can do the same.

Also, it is not a violation of the Privacy Act as  It complies with Freedom of Info Act.

You can find them listed online within 24hours of their arrest, or if it's too large a number of inmates for the website to keep publishing and you know what county the person was arrested you could call the police station or go down there and find out what his/her arrest number is and which jail/prison the person was sent.
