A:

For an alternative to the usual French/Austrian/Swiss alps - have you thought about the Sierra Nevada in Spain near Granada?

One advantage is it is near the Alhambra - a wonderful day out if you like history. Another - the tapas are free with the cheap beer throughout Andalucia. Finally - only a couple of hours easy drive to the Mediterranean and about an hour from some great golf courses in the Antequera area. All without the nose bleed costs associated with the more popular Alpine areas.  And all very child friendly as Spain is a family oriented country.
