What is the origen of the familly name Spitzer?
I was late for work this morning, because I got stuck in Zeno's paradox
The word "spitz" is German, and it means "point". However it could also be used to mean commander or leader. The origin of the surname Spitzer is probably from someone of Ashkenazi origin who was an important person in the community.
I didn't find a complete answer. I think that MackTheKnife covered it. but I did come by a great website that has to do with the research of family names.

It says there that the name first appears in context of land disputes. So maybe, and this is only my interpretations, "point", refers to the warrior nature of the family that fought for her lands.
"SPITZER (also Spitz, Shpitz)--Ashkenazic name taken from the town of Spitz in Austria."
