I'm not sure she changes so much as he does. He comes into the war confused because of one set of ideals, and ends up being no less confused, but because he has come to realize his ideals are meaningless, and everything he thought important is totally different.
The fact that she dies in the end sort of indicates the sens of lost hope for him. She is the only reflection of romance in the novel, and then she dies.
