Without flying to New York, where can I go to sell my scrap Gold in or near Slidell, Louisiana"
I may not be Mr. Know It All, but I knew him well and he taught me much.
Well I'm sure things are back to normal in Slidell since Katrina. So I would say you should go to a coin shop. Very important! Do not mistake a pawn shop that sells/buys coins as a coin shop. Go to the real deal coin shop. They will give you the best payout. They will buy your gold based on it's gold weight if it's 14K or other jewelry gold. They then take a percentage for handling (3-5%) or so. Some will go around 10%. A pawn shop will tell you spot minus 40-50% is a fair price. That is a lie and they are always going to rip you off with something like, "Yeah it's worth a little more, but I have to turn around and sell it so I can't give you the full value." The coin shop will give you the full value. Spot gold is the daily price for gold according to the worlds' stock markets. You can see the spot gold price at kitco.com. One more thing. There is no such thing as "old jewelry". Gold will always be valuable, and jewelry will maintain it's value no matter how old it gets. There is no such thing as worn out gold. Almost any gold jewelry can be repaired if broken, so think about that before you basically give away your family inheritance or heirloom jewelry. Great grandma's ring may have cost only $50 in 1920, but the gold and the diamond in it is valuable. That $50 is now probably worth many hundreds or even thousands. Don't get ripped off by selling for gold weight when the item may be worth much more as jewelry.
