Facebook Blocked in Syria

Facebook (among other applications) was blocked in Syria by the government.

We're all really concerned with the future of Syria, and take great offense at the fact the democracy is trampled in this way.

Yeah.

Does anyone actually have friends from Syria on Facebook?

I don't have friends from Syria yet.  But with thousands of Syrians on Facebook, it's possible that I will someday.

There are currently 28,570 people in Facebook's Syria network.  I suppose that they're not all active users living in Syria.  Still, I imagine that thousands of people would be affected by a block on Facebook by the Syrian government.

I actually (and respecfully) disagree with yeddascott. Thousands of Syrians are probably expatriots living outside of Syria at the moment. I doubt there are social networks that are very active in Syria.

Whether or not my view or Sarina's view is correct, I think that you'll find this report to be interesting background reading:

Computers are the wave of the future.

I am shocked and at the same time, not surprised. Syria is turning into a dictatorship and no one but the dictator can have a voice. I only hope that the Syrian people will rise about it and reclaim their freedom of speech and freedom to read and write and be whomever they want to be on- and offline.
