Extremely long, thick hair . . . style advice?

I have hair that reaches my hips, and it's very thick and heavy. It seems unruly; at school, most other girls don't have a lot of frizz, but I do. And, it doesn't have much volume. I don't know much about hair styling, and I have very few hair products. Is there something I could do to make it more polished and professional? Someone suggested "layering" . . . what's that? I'm not willing to spend a fortune at salons, but I'd spend a couple bucks on some drugstore products. Any advice would be helpful. (And no, I'm not going to cut it. Please don't tell me to.)

My daughter is a stylist - there is a procedure - it can be expensive, but it straightens the hair, and eliminates frizz, and it usually lasts months, until your hair grows back, a good salon it could run a few hundred dollars.  Also a good stylist could thin your hair.  They have special sizzors that thin hair.  Get a flat iron and a product made for use with the flat iron.

What you think about you bring about!!!

So here goes; I have to get this off my chest......why you want hair that long is WAY beyond me!!! how much time do you spend shampooing, etc,??? but I guess you feel it's worth it.....Are you using a hairdryer? or do you let it air dry...the air drying would be the best thing, but I guess that would take a long time....if you do use a hair dryer, do NOT use it on the highest temperature!!!!!!! and please take a little longer to dry it, at a slightly lower heat setting.......best of all, get yourself a hair dryer with the 'cool' button; as you finish each section, you can 'blast' it with the cool air; this helps the outer layer of the hair lay down, giving a little shine........

Now with the hair texture you have, there's nothing you can do at home, for free or at low cost....the layering someone referred to is a method of cutting the hair so that it lays better, giving you more manageability......you should, by all means, be using those shampoos and conditiors for curly/frizzy/wavy hair...they are really good!!!!!

But that's just a start.......if you insist on having that lenghth of hair, with the texture that it is,you have to consider layering, at the VERY LEAST.......

Whatever you do, DO NOT HAVE YOUR HAIR THINNED!!!!!!!!!!!!  the results will be very upsetting for you; some of the hairs will be shorter, some longer; then you'll really have frizz!!!!

Please consider a good layered cut, and the shampoos/conditioners for curly/frizzy hair........it will be the least you can do to have your hair lots prettier and easy to control, and will make you feel better in the long run.....

There is a styling device that consists of a rotating roller that sits on a flat piece with a small row of bristles on each side of it; the hair is thus not 'baked' which the flatirons tend to do, and it smooths and gently heats the hair........the name escapes me right now.....but maybe you could look around online to see if you could find it......other than that, please consider my other suggestions!!

By the way, I'm a retired hairdresser........

My daughter has hair down to her behind. It used to be down to her knees, but she got it cut.

She also has lots of hair, and as hers is curly/wavy it also tends to frizz.

She does not use a blow dryer or other heat styling products, she does not color or perm her hair, and if she wears it down; strangers stop her and ask if they can touch it.

The best suggestion I can give you is to try different shampoos and conditioners until you find one you like. You can try expensive salon brands, but my daughter has had just as much luck with off the shelf brands from the drugstore.

You might also look around online for groups promoting long hair. My daughter belongs to one called 'long hair lovers,' or something to that effect. If you can locate such a group, I'm sure their members could give you styling advice.

Good luck!

P.S. One last thing: Rethink the advice to get layers. My daughter followed her stylist's advice and did that - one time. It made it very difficult for her to style and next to impossible for her to wear it up. It took months to grow out and get it even; she said she won't make that mistake again.
